Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) invites applications and nominations for the Department Chair of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) in the College of Engineering. We are seeking an internationally renowned scholar with rich management experience, who can motivate the faculty and elevate the reputation of the growing department by identifying, attracting, recruiting and retaining talented faculty and staff. The Chair of the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering will lead a research-intensive department, providing vision in concert with strategic planning of the department which aligns with the goals and strategic plan of the university. The Chair will lead the department to advance and accelerate research, innovation and education and facilitate collaborations across the university as well as nationally and internationally. The Chair will be responsible for departmental budget and strategic planning, personnel and facility management, student cultivation, curriculum development, and other required duties.
- 01 Minimum Qualifications
- An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field;
- Proven track record of leadership, scholarship and teaching that warrants a tenured appointment at the rank of Full Professor;
- Demonstrated administrative leadership and experience in higher education such as the director of a research center or research institute, chair/head of an academic department, or comparable position with responsibilities that included budgeting, strategic planning, personnel management, performance reviews, and promotion and tenure decisions;
- Familiarity with higher education systems.

About the Department
Founded in January 2016, the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) currently has more than 20 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members, with a plan to grow to 40 in the future. As of October 2019, the department has more than 60 undergraduate students and over 100 graduate students. The MAE program aims at equipping students with knowledge and skills in Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering, with the emphasis on cultivating students with spirit of innovation, teamwork and leadership. The department’s academic activities fall into three main disciplines: fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and aerospace engineering. The department has been ratified by the Ministry of Education to grant Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering. The department research facilities include a newly built aero-acoustic wind tunnel, a state-of-art micro- and nano-mechanics lab, a Smart Drone Lab in collaboration with the National University of Singapore, and a combustion lab currently under heavy construction. In 2019, the MAE program was ranked #16 nationally in its debut ranking managed by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.
